Transfer Compactors – Whats the big deal?

What is a transfer compactor?

A transfer compactor is a large scale industrial compaction machine which compacts waste material at high speed and high volumes. Transfer Compactors are typically used in the management of Solid Waste Material also known as Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The waste material is typically compacted into articulated trailers that are then hauled away by truck. These trailers usually are walking floor trailers which means they self eject when at their final destination – either incineration or landfill.

Where in the waste processing cycle does a Transfer Compactor fit in?

Firstly, let’s take a look at a typical waste cycle. Solid Waste Management or Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is one of the critical actions required to be undertaken in both urban and rural areas. We are all creators of Solid Waste – whether we like it or not. Waste is all around us and we must manage waste in a responsible fashion. For a typical domestic user or small commercial user, this waste is managed by Wheelie Bin Collections by a waste management company or waste contractor. But what happens the waste once it goes in the wheelie bin. Generally speaking, once the wheelie bin is picked up by the Bin Lorry or Garbage Truck, it is compacted by the truck itself – and your wheelie bin is placed back at the kerbside. The truck then continues on its way, collecting each wheelie bin as it goes around its route. Once the truck has completed its route – which are generally optimised so that the truck is at maximum capacity – it returns to its main depot, where it is unloads. The main depots are general materials recovery facilities (MRF).  The unloaded material is then loaded by large scale machinery such as a large bucket loader into additional processing material, such as separating trommels. The material goes through various different screening processes (which are actually pretty cool pieces of engineering) and also through a picking line to extract any materials which may be recycled (these picking lines are either by human hand or robotics). Once anything that can be reused is extracted you then are left with pure solid waste. This waste is then required to be removed and sent to its final resting place – landfill or incineration. So how does one get the processed solid waste material to the end point? This is where the Transfer Compactor comes in – the Transfer Compactor is designed to fit in to the end of the solid waste material processing cycle so all solid waste once processed is deposited directly into the transfer compactor.

Technical Stuff?

So, what is the difference between a Transfer Compactor and a Commercial Blade Compactor

Size, Speed and Power – A Transfer Compactor can compact MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) at a rate of several tonnes per minute at an increased force and speed to compact waste material into the ejector trailer/container. A Commercial Blade Compactor operates on a smaller scale and at a slower speed. Moovmor Transfer Compactors branded as Transpaker can be developed to integrate with a MRF (Materials Recovery Facilities) exact requirements or selected from our standard range of Transfer Compactors which start with the MTP4000-65T and go up as far as the MTP4500-90T with cycle times of 15 to 30 seconds available. These compactors are built to operate in the toughest of environments for sustained usage.

Why should we be concerned about Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)?

As stated by Hoornweg, D., & Bhada-Tata, P. (2012).  In their paper “What a waste: a global review of solid waste management”

“Ten years ago there were 2.9 billion urban residents who generated about 0.64 kg of MSW per person per day (0.68 billion tonnes per year). This report estimates that today these amounts have increased to about 3 billion residents generating 1.2 kg per person per day (1.3 billion tonnes per year). By 2025 this will likely increase to 4.3 billion urban residents generating about 1.42 kg/capita/day of municipal solid waste (2.2 billion tonnes per year). Hoornweg, D., & Bhada-Tata, P. (2012). What a waste: a global review of solid waste management.”

Growth of Municipal Waste is a global issue and as such we need to address the issue at every possible juncture. Firstly, we as individuals must try to reduce our personal generation of waste. Some wastes are unavoidable, and it is the efficient processing and management of the disposal of this waste that is critical to the overall environmental impact.

Attention to Detail at its Finest – Waste Compaction Units Built to last

Portable Compactor
Portable Compactor

Moovmor have been producing Portable Compactors since 1986. Each Compactor is detailed to include long lasting robust components. The Waste Compactor shown is delivered with an 1100L Wheelie Bin Tipping System for lifting the bins by the side lugs which are often fitted on 1100L Wheelie Bins.

Lets take a more detailed look at this particular Portable Waste Compactor.

Portable Compactor

All Moovmor Portable Compactors come with an easy pull out power pack. This makes accessing the engine of the machine so much easier than having to remove access doors etc. It pulls out easily so you can access all the necessary hydraulic components and to top up with oil as required. Making life easy for Service Engineers.

Moovmor’s Rolopak 30 Portable Waste Compactor can come fitted with a Wheelie Bin Tipper for a range of size of bins. What is extremely important when operating a bin lifter on any machine is operator safety. The Portable Compactor shown above is fitted with drop down safety side screens. An alternative to the drop down safety side screens is to have a full surround interlocked safety cage which one rolls up in front of the bin lifter element and then plugs into the machine.

The drop down safety side screens are easy to use and fold back up into position alongside the machine for when the machine is removed off site to be emptied. Once in the travel position (up position) the screens are easily clipped into place and held there so as to prevent them moving downwards whilst travelling to the depot to be emptied. The image below show the detail of the upward position and ease of clipping.

The attention to detail continues throughout the Moovmor Rolopak 30 Portable Compactor. The Rear Door is Top Hung – again for safety for the driver/operator during the emptying process. Each rear door is securely fastened with a heavy duty turnbuckle to ensure the door remains closed regardless of the pressure it comes under. The Rolopak 30 Portable Waste Compactor is finished with heavy duty rollers to make movement and loading by the hooklift truck easy.  No detail is left out – even the elephant gets included in the detail.

PORTABLE COMPACTOR

Moovmor have been designing and building both Portable and Static Compactors since 1986 and are constantly at the forefront of innovation in the waste compactor market.

Shown here is a recent Portable Compactor developed for an overseas market. The Portable Compactor is designed to be easily transported within standard shipping containers.

Normally portable waste compactors are designed with the bin lifter integrated and attached to one end of the machine or to one side of the machine. This client required a side loading bin lifter as opposed to a bin lifter located on the end but also required flexibility for the future relocation – so the hopper of the portable waste compactor needed to be interchangeable to accommodate this future relocation. In this instance we have provided the client with a stand alone mobile wheelie bin tipper which is placed up against the machine for the wheelie bins to be tipped directly into the waste compactor. The Bin Lifter and Compactor connect to each other so that the compactor automatically starts its cycle.

PORTABLE COMPACTOR

To allow the wheelie bin tipper to be easily switched around to the opposite side of the machine, the hopper was fitted with an interchangeable panel – which can be quickly unbolted and switched around to the opposite side. Shown here in the photo above – the panel which has the two black handles is the removable hopper section.

Moovmor can accommodate each sites specific requests and innovate to provide the correct solution for your specific requirements.

Portable Waste Compactors are ideal for range of applications – such as general food waste, cardboard and dry mixed recyclables such as plastics and card. Portable Waste Compactors can be found in various commercial premises ranging from restaurants, food manufacturers, pharmaceutical plants – just about anywhere waste is produced. One of the key benefits of portable waste compactors is that they are an all in one unit – and there is no spillage of material in the removal process. Once waste or recyclables are placed into the compactor they do not come out of the compactor until the back door is opened for emptying purposes. The units are sealed to prevent residue liquids seep out of the compactor container section thus making portable waste compactors a clean tidy solution.

3 New Static Compactors for Pharma Client

Compactor

Moovmor recently designed, manufactured and installed three Static Waste and Recycling Compactor Systems for a new build Pharma Client in Ireland.

For this project the SC2500-26T Model Static Compactor was selected based on the anticipated volumes of waste to be generated by the Client.

Each Compactor is designated to an individual waste stream. One Compactor for General Waste. One Compactor for Dry Mixed Recyclables such as plastic both Hard Plastics HDPE and Soft Plastics LDPE, as well as general items that are considered recyclable. The Final Compactor is for Cardboard Only. So providing onsite segregation of waste with the minimal of labour output.

The Waste and Recycling Compactors are loaded by the clients operatives at dock level, with each compactor having a walk on platform connecting the dock area to the compactor.

Each Compactor is fitted out with a comb bin lifter. Comb bin lifters are suitable for tipping a range of wheelie bins from 240L size up to 1100L size. Each Bin Lifter is rated to lift 450kg which is the maximum rating of an 1100L wheelie bin.

As the waste and recycling compactors are at dock level it allows for maximum operator integration. The operator simple wheels each bin onto the compactor and places it into position. Each bin lifter is fitted with an interlocked safety cage putting the operators safety first. By having an interlocked safety cage installed it ensures that the operator must be outside of the tipping zone at all times in order for the bin lifter to lift and tip the wheelie bin.

Remote Controls for each compactor have also been fitted at dock level so the operator does not need to go to ground level to operate the machine. The Compactor begins it cycle automatically once the bin lifter has commenced its tipping action.

This particular installation also came with guide rails for the containers at ground level. These guide rails perform two functions in this instance. One to ensure 100% accurate container positioning everytime, and two, to protect the drainage that is in place in the concrete yard area – as otherwise it would not be long before the drainage channel would become damaged by the changing of containers.

At ground level each compactor is fitted with an interlocked hopper inspection door which can be used for hand loading at ground level and also to inspect if any blockages occur. Again this is an interlocked door so the machine will automatically stop once the door is opened and will not start unless this door is fully closed – again putting the operators safety first.

Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard Recycling - Moovmor

Cardboard is a valuable recycling commodity; recycling cardboard correctly can be a revenue income for your business as most waste collectors will offer to buy it from you or credit it against your general waste collection. Businesses looking to become more sustainable or environmentally friendly often choose to invest in a cardboard baler or compactor to drastically reduce their waste volumes and reduce the cost involved in the handling of bins.Cardboard is 100% recyclable, so it is easy to recycle and re-introduce into the paper chain. Manufacturing recycled paper instead of new paper ‘uses 54% less energy and 58% less water’.

Cardboard is widely used in packaging, from large boxes used in transportation to the finished product you see on shelves. In Ireland the recycling rate for packaging waste in 2019 was 66% and the recovery rate was 86% as of September 2019. In the UK, figures for 2017 show that 70% of packaging waste was either recycled or recovered. This highlights the importance at which both households and commercial businesses are taking to recycle packaging waste materials, namely cardboard.

The Benefits of Using A Cardboard Baler or Compactor

Wondering why you should invest in a cardboard baler or compactor? If your business is producing a vast amount of cardboard waste or are just simply running out of space for large recycling bins, then a cardboard baler or compactor is the right option for you. Cardboard is used extensively for packaging and as much as we may try, it can be very hard to avoid.

The benefits include:

How Does A Cardboard Baler Work?

The concept remains the same no matter which baler machine you use, plastic is removed from cardboard before it is loaded evenly into an empty chamber. Once the chamber is full, and the door securely closed, a hydraulic pressplate compacts the cardboard into a bale.

The bale size will vary depending on the machine you are using. For example, Moovmor’s Smallest cardboard baler, the Balemaster 100, produces a bale size of 700mm x 600mm x 600mm, while our MX500-36T, a larger machine produces bales up to 500kg in weight. Cardboard Balers are designed to make the task of recycling cardboard easy and safe. It is also very environmentally friendly as these bales can then be recycled. Reducing the need for more recycling bins and the cost involved in lifting such recycling bins. Installing a cardboard baler, takes away the cost of bins and improves the overall waste management of a business.

How Does A Cardboard Compactor Work?

Compactors are largely designed for industrial or commercial use where wheelie bins or small trucks can easily empty waste into the charge box before compacting it. They are a high performing machine, capable of compacting tonnes of waste per hour. They are robust, hard wearing and built to last, making them a good investment for any business. They can also be used to compact a wide range of materials, whether they are sorted or not.

Similarly, to the baler, once cardboard (or other waste materials) have been inserted into the machine, a metal pressplate is used to crush the waste material into smaller more compact pieces. They’re designed to minimise the volume of mixed waste and  to make disposal quicker and easier.

Choosing The Right Baler Or Compactor For Your Business

Baler machines are generally seen to help with the recycling of cardboard waste, while compactors are more associated with compressing large amounts of mixed waste material.  All Moovmor compactors are also suitable for cardboard use. Moovmor’s range of balers and compactors come with standard options as well as a wide variety of fit out options making them extremely versatile and suitable for a wide range of industries.

Choosing between a Horizontal or Vertical Baler – This decision will depend on a number of factors such as the volumes of recyclable materials you build up  on a  daily basis , the manpower available to the business and the space you have available for your machine. Vertical balers would be mainly used for smaller amounts of material and where space is limited whereas horizontal balers would take up more space but are capable of recycling a larger amount of material.

Choosing between a portable, static or transfer compactor – There is a wide selection of compactors to choose from. For many commercial or industrial businesses portable or static compactors are widely used where there is the option to fully customise and add additional features to suit any requirements.

SizeAs cardboard balers and compactors come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, it may be difficult to establish which one is best for you. The amount of space you have available to install a baler or compactor will be a big factor in your decision. As will the waste output. Do you have room to store bales or the availability of equipment to easily move compacted waste?

Compaction force of the machine – With such a wide range of balers and compactors available, it is important to know their outputs. A lower powered machine is suitable for low cardboard volumes while more force will be necessary to compact high volumes of cardboard waste.

What is the average lifespan of a Cardboard Baler or Compactor?

The lifespan of any machine would depend on its usage and whether it has been regularly maintained.  Here at Moovmor some of our machines have been in operation for over 30 years. They are hand crafted to the highest quality and specifications possible. Rigorous testing is carried out to ensure the quality of each product, providing reassurance that each machine is fit to last for a very long time.  We also provide ongoing service and support to your business

A 2018 study conducted by the EPA, showed that in non-household waste collections, paper and cardboard made up 51% of waste in recycling bins, 28% in general waste bins and 3% in organic waste bins. They stated that there were 6 main sectors contributing to the non-household waste, which included hotels, restaurants, general retail, food retail, offices and wholesale businesses. Moovmor have been helping such industries to recycle and reduce their overall waste volumes for over 30 years with our range of  balers and compactors.
